GUIDELINES FOR WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS
Southern Exposure is an award-winning quarterly journal published by the Institute for Southern Studies, a non-profit education and research center. The journal serves as a forum in which participants in Southern movements for social change can share ideas, perspectives, and information about the history, culture, and political economy of the South.
We are always looking for writers who can describe and explain political and cultural developments in ways that will interest non-specialists. Whenever possible, articles should recount specific experiences of individual Southerners or grassroots groups and relate them to larger issues.
Whatever the story, we want the reader to know why she or he should care about it: What do particular events indicate about the workings of our society, our economy, or our political system?
We accept investigative reports, profiles, oral histories, photos, and social commentary that reflect our interest in Southern culture and social change. We currently accept no fiction or poetry.
Please examine recent issues of Southern Exposure and review our editorial statement before submitting material. For a sample copy, send $5.00 and a self-addressed 9" x 12" envelope to the address below.
Writers are encouraged to submit query letters before undertaking major articles. Manuscripts must be typed and double-spaced, and accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope. We generally respond within four weeks.
Articles run from 500 words in our Southern News Roundup to 5,000 words or more for a major piece. The usual fee is 10 cents a word. Unless an author specifies otherwise, Southern Exposure buys all rights.
We also accept compelling photographic images of the South and its people. Photographers should submit black and white prints. The usual fee runs from $25 to $50.
